Some commercial motorcycle riders, popularly
called Okadamen , and miscreants, yesterday, killed Mr. S. Bakare, the Zonal Head of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, at Point Road in Apapa Local Government.
The mob action is coming barely two weeks after the state government vowed to commence full enforcement of traffic laws against Okada riders plying the restricted 475 roads across the state, urging LASTMA, Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS, task force and the Police to immediately embark on enforcement.
Sources said the government’s directive might have prompted the reaction of the miscreants and Okada riders, who swooped on the zonal head and his team, while they were managing traffic within the Apapa axis.
Vanguard gathered that Bakare was recently transferred to Apapa Zone (Zone 13) from Zone 37. A LASTMA official, who does not want to be named, told Vanguard : “It was motorcyclists and touts that attacked him, while he was managing traffic within the axis. “In fact, he was recently transferred to Apapa after residents complained that they spend more time in traffic
than expected. He was expected to bring his ingenuity to bear on managing traffic within the axis.”
LASTMA GM laments
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bashir Braimah, who confirmed the incident, lamented that the deceased and his team were on their routine activities which was aimed at reducing travel time. Police Public Relation Officer, Dolapo Badmus, in an interview with Vanguard , said: “We have commenced investigation to arrest the perpetrators of the act. We will not accept this in Lagos. Law and order must be adhered to in Lagos.
